The Optical Valley Branch Opened and Celebration of 115th Anniversary of Tongji Hospital

On Oct.28th, the Optical Valley Branch of Tongji Hospital is officially put into use. With the coverage of 16.675 hectares, the Optical Valley Branch is expected to provide 3,000 beds in total. Today, the 1st phase of construction is completed, which covers a building area of 184,000 m2 and 1000 ward beds available. The building is optimized by connecting registration, waiting, consultation, payment, examination, treatment, and dispensary procedures. In the first floor, a sunny and bright 180m long corridor running from south to north links the outpatient and emergency departments, medical building and inpatient hospital together and provides patients with easy access to any of these facilities.  The design of the buildings embodies the concept of modernization, informatization and humanism, and highlights the trend of modern hospital buildings.

In the morning, the opening ceremony was held in the lobby of Optical Valley branch. Mayor WANG Yong of Wuhan Municipal City, President Ding Lieyun of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Mr. Yang Youwang, chairman of Hubei Health and Family Planning Commission, Prof. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, the academician of National Academy of Sciences in America, of Stanford University, Prof. Christian Ohrloff, president of German-Sino Medicine of Society, Prof. Chen Anmin, president of Sino-German Medicine of Society, Prof. Xu Yongjian, president of Tongji Hospital, Mrs. WU Jing, chairman of Tongji hospital board attended the ceremony.

In the afternoon, the ceremony of the 115 Anniversary of Foundation and the 60th Anniversary Conference of Relocation from Shanghai to Wuhan was held. In 1900, the hospital was founded by a German doctor Erich Paulun in Shanghai with only 20 beds. It was the first hospital in China founded by German. In 1955, in accordance with the national development policy, the hospital moved from Shanghai to Wuhan. After 60 years development, with the role of a center, model, radiant, and guide of medical service, Tongji has already become a top medical institution in China and enjoys a high reputation worldwide.

For the past 60 years, the hospital has received a total of 73 million outpatients, 2 million inpatients and performed over 800,000 surgeries. The number of national key clinical specialties reaches 30, ranking the second in China. The hospital has cultivated 23,678 students in total, including 6,577 postgraduates and 17,101 undergraduates, with an employment rate of nearly 100%.

After the ceremony, the 6th Arts and Culture Festival of Tongji Hospital was held and all the audience watch the performance. Most of the performers are Tongji employees.
