Eight National Key Disciplines
Surgery (Thoracic Surgery, Organ Transplantation)

Department of Thoracic Surgery was the 1st in China to use hepatectomy to treat liver disease. Now it has performed over 10,000 liver operations.

Institute of Organ Transplantation holds 3 records of research and practice in Asia: the earliest in time, the most in transplant types and the best in results. Now it can perform 14 types of human organ, tissue and cell transplantation. It set and holds China’s records of the longest functional survival of liver and kidney transplants.

The department of Thoracic Surgery of Tongji hospital, Huazhong University of Science and Technology was established in 1960’s and is the largest professional clinical diagnosis and treatment center in central China. At present, there are 120 patient beds and 18 unique postoperative ICU beds in the department. More than 2,000 cases of thoracic operations are performed annually. The department is comprised of eighteen staff with three professors, five associate professors, five attending surgeons and five residents.

The department of Thoracic Surgery is one of the few general thoracic surgery doctoral training bases and is the only state-level general thoracic surgery training base in Hubei province. Our department is the only clinical research center of esophageal cancer in south region authorized by the national committee of esophageal cancer.

Our department specializes in surgical treatments of lung, esophagus, mediastinum and chest wall diseases. In addition to conventional surgery, we have particular expertise in the management of complex surgical treatment of the thoracic diseases. The diagnostic and therapeutic techniques have been in the leading position.

Institute of Organ Transplantation, Tongji Hospital, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, is a multi-organ transplant center. Our clinical programs include: kidney (deceased and living donor), liver (deceased and living donor), pancreas, heart, lung, and multi-organ transplantation. Our institute is located in the middle part of China and is the first large-scale comprehensive institute for both clinical and basic research on organ transplantation in China. The Institute is currently the only key Laboratory of Organ Transplantation of both Ministry of Education(MOE) and Ministry of Health(MOH) of China.

In June 2007, our transplant center was Selected by the Ministry of Health of the People’s Republic of China as one of the top transplant centers in China, recognizing our heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplant programs.

As a center in the teaching hospital, we issue a master degree program and doctor degree program in clinical transplantation and transplant immunology. We also offer a 2-year post-doctor fellowship in the basic research of transplantation.

In 1979, our institute was granted as the first professional and systematic institute for organ transplantation by MOH . In 1986, it was approved as the first key laboratory by MOH. In 1989, it was upgraded as a national key discipline for organ transplantation and general surgery by MOE.
