Nuclear Medicine

Department of Nuclear Medicine was founded in 1985, currently shouldering the responsibility of medical treatment, education and scientific research. There are 16 staffs in total, including 4 Associate Chief Physicians, 1 attending doctor and 3 Senior Technologists, 2 Master Tutors, 3 Instructor and 3 Teaching Assistants. Thanks to the development in the past decades, Nuclear Medicine stands in the leading level in the nation wide, and Molecular Nuclear Medicine in Oncology stands out in particular. Our department attracts several state-level, province-level and ministry-level funding projects, publishes several research papers in SCI and EI, assisting to take 973 crucial national researches and being awarded second prize for Hubei Science and Technology Advancement and third prize for Department of Health Science and Technology Advancement.

Our department is equipped with state-of-the-art apparatuses including GE SPECT and SPECT/CT with dual-head gamma cameras, thyroid function tester, SIEMENS automatic chemiluminescence analysator,Roche automatic electrochemiluminescence analysator,γradioimmunoanalyzer, enabling us to carry out organic imaging and function determination, detection of thyroid function、hebin level and various tumor markers. Thanks to new technologies and new practice being imported in the recent years, internal-radiation therapy with nuclides have stridden forward a big step, for example, treatment of hyperthyreosis with 131I,treatment of bone metastatic carcinoma with 89SrCl2 or 153Sm-EDTMP,treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with“YUN KE” have the characteristics of their own, all taking a leading position in China and enjoying wide attention and praise.

Clinical Specialty
1. SPECT/CT  Organic imaging and function determination
SPECT imaging reflects any change related to bloodstream, metabolism and function among the organs. CT demonstrates difference on anatomic structure. The technology of multispectral imaging fusion helps to improve the exactness of anatomical orientation of lesions, thus, winning unique predominance in diagnosis of thyroid diseases,kidney diseases,pulmonary embolism,evaluation of pulmonary function,bone metastasis of tumor,cardiovascular diseases,ectopic gastric mucosa,alimentary tract hemorrhage,Gougerot-Houwe syndrome,parathyroidoma and chromaffin tumor.

Thyroid Imaging: Diagnosing hyperthyreosis,hypothyroidism,thyreoitis,ectopic thyroid gland, and determine function of thyroid nodule.

Whole Body Bone Scan: Exploring osseous metastasis of malignant tumor and following up the treatment of metastasis, discovering bone metastasis 3 to 6 months earlier than X-ray inspection.

Nnephro-dynamic Iimaging: Assessing individual renal function--- being sensitive, convenient and hurtles, facilitating diagnosis of renal vascular diseases, urinary obstruction, etc.

Pulmonary Perfusion/Ventilation Imaging: Early diagnosis and differential diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, which show negative in the early stage of disease, and facilitating to predict the function of residual lung after pulmonary lobectomy.

Myocardial Perfusion Imaging(Stress/Rest): Being a convenient and hurtless way to diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD), being available to diagnose CAD in early stage, instructing clinical treatment, assessing risk and prognosis of CAD, predicting cytoactive of cardiomyocytes, being more sensitive and superfine than movement ECG.

Hepatobiliary Dynamic Imaging: Mirroring the expediency of liver and biliary, assessing and diagnosing congenital biliary atresia, neonatal hepatitis and choledochal cyst, observing efficacy of hepatobiliary surgery, and monitoring the function of liver graft.

Adrenal Medulla Imaging: Being a way to diagnose specificity of pheochromocytoma, ectopic pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma.

Parathyroid Imaging: Diagnosing parathyroid adenoma and parathyroid hyperplasia.

Salivary Gland Imaging:Assessing the function of salivary gland, and diagnosing Gougerot-Houwe syndrome and occupying lesion of salivary gland.

Ectopic Gastric Mucosa Imaging: Bing the first choice to diagnose Meckel diverticulum and duplication of intestine on account of its convenience, hurtlessness, sensitivity and high specificity.

Alimentary Tract Hemorrhage Imaging: Being able to observing whole bowel irrigation for as long as 24 hours sensitively, hurtlessly and conveniently, and possessing big advantage in diagnosing chronic intermittent gastrointestinal bleeding and multiple hemorrhage nudi.

3. Internal-radiation Therapy
The three treatments, treating hyperthyreosis with 131I, treating bone metastatic carcinoma with 89SrCl2 or 153Sm-EDTMP, and treating rheumatoid arthritis with “YUN KE”, have the characteristics of their own, all taking a leading position in Hubei and winning wide attention and praise.

Treating hyperthyreosis with 131I:
More than six-decade clinical application, over 2,000,000 international patients and 200,000 national patients prove its convenience, inexpensiveness, good healing effect, low recurrence rate and few complicating disease. The third to forth month after an Iodine Treatment, 60~80% patients can recover to normal thyroid function, 95% treatment are in effect.

Treating bone metastatic carcinoma with 89SrCl2 or 153Sm-EDTMP:
They are used to alleviate pain for advanced cancer patient, to improve their living quality and to control disease progression. Clinical experience approved that 89SrCl2 and 153Sm-EDTMP, being convenient, is likely to alleviate pain caused by bone metastatic carcinoma and to cause little side effect.

Treating rheumatoid arthritis with “YUN KE”:
On account of high efficiency, little side effect and the ability to reverse bone damage, it is the most effective way to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Scientific Research
In Molecular Nuclear Medicine in Oncology, our department takes the leading position in the nation wide, attracts several research projects sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation, Hubei Natural Science Foundation, Department of Health and Ministry of Education, publicizes several research papers which cited by SCI and EI, and wins Hubei Natural Science Excellent Paper Award twice. Meanwhile, our department assists to take 973 crucial national research projects, and be awarded second prize for Hubei Science and Technology Advancement and third prize for Department of Health Science and Technology Advancement.

Our department shoulders to teach nuclear medicine to postgraduates, seven-year, eight-year, and five-year undergraduates and medical college students. In the recent years, the staffs, with rich teaching experience, have cultured 11 doctors and 18 postgraduates.

The Dean of the department is Xiao-Hua Zhu.
