The department of Hepatic Surgery, a branch of general surgery in Tongji hospital, was founded in the late 1950s, and then formally established as a hepatic surgical center in 1998 under the leadership of Professor Xiao-ping Chen. For more than half a century, the hepatic surgical center of Tongji Hospital, one of the leading hepatic surgical centers in China, was the first or early to carry out a variety of new clinical services and new clinical technologies including various types of portosystemic shunt, anatomic liver resection, liver transplantation, liver resection guided by ultrasound, liver resection for huge liver cancer, ablation for liver cancer, laparoscopic partial hepatectomy and so on. As one of the three leading hepatic surgical centers in China, the hepatic surgical center of Tongji Hospital mainly carries out surgical treatments for portal hypertension and all kinds of hepato-pancreato-biliary diseases. The surgical treatment for large and huge liver cancer and portal hypertension is unique and achieves domestic and international advanced level. There are 120 open beds, a complete-equipped minimally invasive treatment room and an advanced laboratory. The number of outpatient visits reaches to 14,000 and the number of operations is more than 1,000 every year. Up to now, more than 10,000 cases of various liver operations have been performed in this hepatic surgical center, including successful resection for one patient with hepatic hemangioma weighing more than 10 kilograms and one patient with hepatocellular carcinoma weighing 7 kilograms. Besides, our department is the first to carry out vascular surgery in Hubei province, and the treatment of diseases includes aneurysm, artery occlusion, arteriovenous thrombosis, varicose veins, chronic limb ulcer, and so on.

Since the 1970s, the hepatic surgical center has been pioneered in systemic study of liver transplantation in China, had an in-depth study of hilar anatomy, developed and perfected the devascularization in treatment of portal hypertension in theory and practice, innovated five new technologies of hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery and therefore has obtained more than 50 awards of a variety of scientific research. In 2003, "the series research and technical improvement of liver surgery" won the second class prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Professor Xiao-ping Chen, the leader of the hepatic surgical center, is a fellow of American College of surgeons, a standing committee of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, chairman of Chinese chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and chairman of liver group of surgery branch of Chinese Medical Association.
