Department of Infectious Disease

Department of Infectious Disease, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College of HUST was established in the 1950s. With the unremitting efforts of generations for half a century, the department has reached a higher level in recent years under the leadership of the academic leader Professor Qin Ning, who is a chief scientist of epidemiology in the National 973 Program, and has developed into an infectious disease research, prevention and control base and a personnel training center of certain scale and uniqueness.

(1) Modernized Diagnosis and Treatment System of Infectious Diseases

The Department owns the first-class medical facilities, medical technologies and medical management level in China. Its outpatient service area is 800m2; its in-patient department has three medical inpatient areas for viral hepatitis and infectious diseases, etc.; it owns China’s first-class artificial liver treatment center; and it is equipped with a great number of large diagnosis and treatment equipments including artificial liver therapeutic apparatus, doppler ultrasound diagnosis apparatus, liver fibrosis diagnosis apparatus (Fibroscan) and colon therapeutic apparatus, etc. The Department provides the medical services for a large coverage, and it locates in the central south of China and radiates across the country. Annually, it provides the outpatient service for over 80,000 patients, treats more than 2,000 inpatients in ward and provides the artificial liver treatment for more than 300 patients.


(2) Reasonably Structured and High-level Academic Team

The academic leader of the Department is Professor Qin Ning , who is a chief scientist of epidemiology in the National 973 Program. The key researchers in various research focuses have become younger and brought active academic atmosphere and novel academic ideas. Meanwhile, some old experts and professors are still working in the front line of clinic, scientific research and teaching, and helping create a favorable team spirit of inheritance, assistance and tutoring. Now, the Department has 6 professors (who are all PhD director), 7 associate professors, 10 people with intermediate title and 3 people with junior title. It also recruits 3 retired professors.


(3) High-level Scientific Research

The Department has established the well-equipped supporting system for scientific research, including the modern experimental research platforms for virology, bacteriology, immunology, molecular biology, cytobiology and histomorphology, etc. In recent years, it has undertook more than 20 national major topics from the National “973” Program, “863” Program, the “Eleventh Five-year” Program for Science and Technology Development and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. and its fund for scientific research has currently reached to more than RMB30 million. In the past five years, it published more than 70 high-quality SCI papers.


(4) High-quality Teaching System

The Department is an important base for China’s clinical teaching of epidemiology and training of scientific researchers. It has 2 people honored with “Shanghai Bao Gang Education Award” and 5 people honored with the “First Prize of HUST Young College Teachers’ Teaching Competition”. Its teaching and research sections has been honored by the College as the “Advanced Unit of Teaching” many times and its course Epidemiology has been elected as a provincial “Best Course”. Professor Qin Ning serves as an associate editor of the national textbook Epidemiology for the eight-year education program. In recent years, the Department has reasonably integrated the medical, teaching and research resources according to its own features and guidance of social demands, to nurture and cultivate a group of high-level talented people characteristic of sound foundation of academic knowledge as well as prominent innovative competence and development potential. Every year, the Department completes the multi-level teaching for PhD, master, undergraduate and college students for more than 200 hours. In the past 5 years, it cultivated 86 postgraduate students in total, of which 43 received the master degree and 33 received the doctorate degree.


(5) Extensive External Cooperation and Communication (domestic and international)

Domestic: By taking the lead in the major topic of infectious diseases Fundamental Study on Serious Hepatitis B Clinical Testing and Treatment in the National 973 Program, the Tenth Five-year and Eleventh Five-year Programs for Science and Technology Development and other scientific research programs, the Department engages in the cooperation with a dozen of domestic famous colleges and hospitals, and establishes the Nationwide Cooperation Network for Virus Hepatitis (including 10 large hospitals). On a periodical basis, the Department holds some domestic academic activities in all levels to give play to its role of radical radiation, so as to realize the strong collaboration, resource sharing and joint improvement.

International: The Department employs the mode of “going out, bringing in” to keep the extensive international academic exchange and cooperation. It has established the steady cooperative relationship with a dozen of foreign universities, including University of Toronto in Canada, University of Southern California in America, University of Freiburg and Heidelberg University in Germany and other first-class foreign universities. Meanwhile, the Department has sent personnel to other countries for further study in a planned manner. Every year, a lot of its personnel are invited to attend the international academic meetings and give speeches at these meetings. In this way, the Department improves its academic influence around the world.
