Department of Hematology

Department of Hematology features a nationally most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic system for hemopathy and is equipped with a specialized diagnostic laboratory and many advanced detectors. Its diagnosis of various kinds of hemopathy has moved from the morphological level to the genetic and molecular levels, enabling individualized and rationalized therapy with markedly improved effects. It originated several new techniques of bone marrow transplantation, curing a large number of patients.

Founded in 1959, Department of Haematology in Tongji hospital is one of the most famous Haematology Departments in China. With strong expertise on clinical treatment of haematological disorders as well as state-of-art molecular diagnostic techniques built up over the years, the department was approved to establish the National Key Department of Ministry of Health in China and has become a top-ranked department in the middle of China. Each year there are hundreds and thousands of patients countrywide being treated here, we are especially renowned for treating a variety of hematological disorders such as anemia, bleeding disorder, and leukemia.

We are proud of having a strong and high-level clinical and research team which includes 5 professors, 6 associated professors, and 10 consultants, 15 of which have medical doctoral degree. We have 70 general patient beds, 6 beds for bone marrow transplantation. We have also excellent haematological laboratories with many skilled technicians as well as the most advanced equipments such as flow cytometry, confocal laser microscope, and chromosome workstations. We are currently presided over a number of national major scientific and technological development fund and project, actively introducing new medical treatment strategies and promoting the theoretical revolution in technology.

With the most advanced technology and clinical skills, we become one of the largest haematology departments in China and serving thousands of patients in the region. In the past few years, intensive attention has been devoted to improve the molecular diagnostic techniques. We aim to screen each patient not only from morphological level but also at genetic level, as some genetic mutations strongly connect with the prognosis of the patient and are critical to be recognized. Recently the diagnosis of various blood diseases has been performed at the morphologic and molecular genetic level in the department, which allows the individual, rationalized treatment and has significantly improved the treatment efficacy of many hematological malignancies including leukemia patients.

During the past 10 years, the Department had more than 80 papers published on the core journals, including the leading journals of the world, such as "The Journal of Experimental Medicine", "Cancer Research", "Clinical Cancer Research", "Molecular therapy ". It had also edited several Chinese textbooks such as “Internal medicine in China” and “leukemia”. The department has got lots of important national awards, including grants from National Natural Sciences Foundation, “973” project and “863” project, and has built up wide collaboration with scientific organizations in many countries and regions such as USA, UK, Germany, France and Hong Kong.

Haematological laboratory is instrumented advanced cell and molecular biology research equipments, including cell culture equipment (biological safety cabinets, CO2 incubator, inverted microscope and fluorescent inverted microscope, etc.), gel imaging analysis system, -80 ℃ refrigerator, cold centrifuge, PCR instrument and three sets of real-time PCR machine, hybridization oven, ice machine, 4 color flow cytometry, etc. Since 1996, the department has invested more than 10 million purchasing molecular cell biology research equipment, including nucleic acid research, protein analysis, cytogenetic analysis, cell culture facilities.
