Reproductive Medicine

The Reproductive Medical Center of Tongji Hospital was established in 1998. In the early 1990s, we began to cooperate with WHO in the research of reproductive endocrinology. Until now nearly all of the modern assisted reproductive technologies have been successfully carried out in our center, including in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET, or the test tube baby), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) , testicular sperm aspiration (TESA)/ percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection, oocyte donation (OD), Frozen-thawed embryo transfer(FET), multifetal pregnancy reduction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and gamete intrafallopian transfer(GIFT), etc.

In 1995, the first laparoscopic Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT) baby of Mainland China was born in Tongji Hospital. From then on, IVF-ET (the first generation of test tube baby), OD, ICSI (the second-generation of test tube baby), TESA/PESA, Vitrification and thawing, etc. succeeded sequentially. The first vitrified Frozen-thawed baby of Mainland China was successful delivered in our center in September 2003. By December 2010, we have carried out more than 15,000 IVF cycles, and the annual IVF cycles is more than 2,500, with the successful rate around 40%.

As early as in 1997, our research on ‘laparoscopic gamete intrafallopian transfer’ acquired the second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Hubei Province and the first prize awarded by the Chinese Ministry of Health. In 2007, ‘the clinical and basic series study on assisted reproductive technology in human’ obtained the third prize for Progress in Science and Technology awarded by Chinese Medical Association, the second Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in Hubei province , and the second prize for progress in the Science and Technology in Wuhan city. So far, we have published more than 200 papers in domestic and foreign journals, and acquired many research projects supported by Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Health and the Hubei Committee of Science and Technology.
