In Jan. 1993, he began the study in Arteriosclerosis Institute of Muenster University, Federal Republic of Germany. His research work was specialized in the molecular biological exploration on the relation and mechanism of insulin resistance and lipoproteins metabolism. With his effort, after the intensive investigation, the novel genetic mutations such as shift mutation of 38C deletion, Q165U、 A373P、R451Q and I405V in cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), the key enzyme of regulating high-density lipoproteins (HDL) metabolism, were discovered firstly, and their influences on plasma HDL metabolism and lipids profile were demonstrated respectively. In April 1997, he was conferred the doctor medicinae with magna cum laude by Muenster University. Currently he has been intensively engaged in the clinical and experimental study on the endocrine and metabolic diseases in the field of integrative traditional Chinese and western medicine. Firstly he issued the hypothesis Treating Diabetes with TCM Detoxifying Method. Later based on the practice and advanced research progress, he modified the hypothesis and put forward the viewpoint TCM Approaches for the Treatment of Diabetes Mellitus: Shift from Emphasizing Supplementing Qi and Nourishing Yin to Incorporating with Removing Toxin and Intensifying Yang, which has been attracted the great attention in the academic professionals and public media.

Now he is the member of the council of China Association of Integrative Medicine (CAIM), vice chairman of endorinology council of CAIM, vice chairman of Hubei Association of Integrative Medicine (HBAIM), chairman of endorinology council of HBAIM, vice chairman of Wuhan Association of Integrative Medicine. He is also the editorial board member of a series of academic journals such as Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine in Intensive and Critical Care, Chinese Journal of Basic Medicine in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Journal of Chinese Integrative Medicine, Asia-Pacific Traditional Medicine, Research of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology [Med Sci] . He is the chief editor of Basic Traditional Chinese Medicine, a textbook for 21st Century Students directed by Education Ministry, which has been published by Science Press. Furthermore he is also the chief editor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a textbook for medical students of national universities or colleges, which has been published by High Education Press. As a principal investigator, Dr. Lu has been intensively involved in about 13 projects like the grants of National 863 Planning, the grants of National Support Programming, the grants from National Science Foundation of China, and ministry or province scientific projects, etc. Totally, Dr. Lu has published 253 scientific papers in a variety of academic journals, among which 15 papers enrolled by SCI. There are 7 scientific and technological achievements which have been honored with ministry or province prizes. He is also the owner of special government allowance.
